About the Event
We have used the term self-protection quite deliberately. Often these course are called self-defence and a few standalone techniques are taught. This course is much more rounded and in many respects nuanced. We will obviously look at self-defence, but in doing so we look at principles that underpin them and so can apply them to many different situations. We also look at the most obvious ways someone may be attacked or assaultedWe also look at situations that are risky and potentially dangerous and how we can make them safer. This includes the obvious (don’t go down that dark alley – although this might not be quite as dangerous as you think!) and also the less obvious (such as the supermarket car park).De-escalation techniques are also covered. This is where we learn to use our verbal skills to attempt to de-escalate or calm down a situation. This is very useful, but only appropriate in some situations. For others, learning to be assertive is better.Other aspects – being safe at university; travelling both nationally and internationally; at home.Situational awareness: a particular favourite! If you have tried mindfulness you have already had a go at this. This is the ability to quickly get a feel for a particular environment and spot what is either wrong or potentially a threat. For instance, in a busy shopping street who is the potential mugger, and what can you do to make yourself less of a target?
